Definition:- 

Necrosis of lung tissue is known as lung abscess which is caused by the local infection of the lung.

Causes:-

  • Septic emboli
  • penetrating injury
  • pneumococcus
  • Haemophilus influenza
  • Coliform organism
  • Aspiration of gastric contents
  • Chronic upper respiratory tract infection
  • partial / complete bronchial obstruction
  • Streptococcus, staphylococcus

Clinical features:-

  • Dry cough
  • Pleural pain
  • Hemoptysis
  • Putrid sputum
  • Foul smelling
  • Fever, Tachycardia

Investigation:-

  • Culture & sensitivity of sputum
  • CBC
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Chest x-ray

Treatment:-

Medical:- 

  • Antibiotics
  • Postural drainage
  • Bronchodilators

Surgical:-

  • Pneumonotomy
  • Pulmonary resection
